York Castle was the location of an infamous massacre of its Jewish inhabitants, in which at least 150 died (although some authorities put the figure as high as 500) in 1190. Attracting loyal audiences from around the country to see its veteran star, Berwick Kaler is the Theatre Royal, which produces annually and was established in 1744.

In 2002, the effects of a move to the out of town Huntington Stadium, poor results and falling attendances led to the bankruptcy of York FC, later known as York Wasps, one of the oldest rugby league clubs in the country formed in 1901. York City Knights, who now play at the same stadium in Championship 1 is the new club formed by the supporters.

A historic walled city in North Yorkshire, England is York. It is the traditional county town of the historic county of Yorkshire at the confluence of the River Ouse and Foss. First as a teacher at the school at York now known as St Peter's School, founded in 627 AD, and later as Charlemagne's leading advisor on ecclesiastical and educational affairs, were parts of his long career as a teacher and scholar.
